An Oaxacan Heirloom

After some early confusion about its origin, a European breeder traced the source of this Oaxacan heirloom and confirmed the region with growers in Mexico — Oaxaca being the region Mexican cultivators themselves rank first for quality genetics. 

This “black pearl” is mostly sativa, but it doesn't behave like one. The growth pattern is more compact, with broader leaves which could be an indication that, like many other Mexican cultivars, there was some refinement in its progression.  That being said, we still feel this leans on the sativa-dominate side.  The fruity funky aromas are powerful and memorable.

Heritage Notes

Mexican cultivators consistently name Oaxaca as the country’s finest source of genetics, and the state’s growing traditions run deep — shaped by dry, hot conditions and generations of selection by growers who kept their own seed. La Perla Negra is maintained the traditional way, mother crossed back to her own son, with no outside genetics introduced. That method is slower than modern breeding and it is the reason the line still reads as Oaxacan.
