Maui Wowie — 1979 Cherry Bomb
A daytime cultivar with real depth
The best-documented cut of the most famous Hawaiian name, and a genuinely unusual pedigree: a 50/50 hybrid of 1970s Oaxacan Mexican and Afghani, sourced and bred through the Brotherhood of Eternal Love, then selected for more than three decades by the late Mr. Greengenes for potency, flavor, and flower shape.
The aroma is distinctive — metallic and sweet cherry over wood. Structure runs to tall Oaxacan spears with the prized compact "monkey fist" indica expressions appearing throughout. The effect is moderate to strong, sometimes frankly psychedelic, but functional: no anxiety, no couch-lock. A daytime cultivar with real depth.

Maui’s cane-field growers and the countercultural networks that reached the islands in the 1960s and 70s produced a body of genetics that shaped American cannabis far beyond Hawai’i. This particular line — Oaxacan crossed to Afghani, sourced through the Brotherhood of Eternal Love and then selected for more than thirty years by a single breeder— is a rare case where the whole chain of custody is known. That kind of documented continuity is vanishingly rare.
