Chocolate Thai
One of the most mythologized imports of the era
Thai flowers arrived in the United States through the early 1970s, often bound to sticks, and the "chocolate" designation went to the darkest and most coffee-scented of the lot. The aroma is the signature: roasted cocoa and dark coffee over damp earth and sandalwood. The effect is classically Thai — clear, electric, and long-running, with none of the weight of modern hybrids. It was known for its invigorating and creative effects, which provided a sense of overall well-being and euphoria. We acquired the original seeds from the Snow High seed bank, which has been working to preserve this line for years. We continue to improve this landrace cultivar with selective breeding and incorporated it into our Thai Stick Project.
Heritage Notes
1970sThailand’s cannabis tradition is centuries old, with regional cultivation practices — including the tying of flowers to stems for curing and transport — that produced a product unlike anything grown in the West. The Thai imports of the early 1970s reset expectations for what cannabis could be, and their influence runs through the sativa lines that followed. Very little original stock survives, which makes every honest reconstruction worth documenting carefully.
