Alaska (Matanuska) Thunder Fuck

One of the few American cultivars with a genuine regional identity

Out of the Matanuska Valley north of Anchorage, developed through the late 1970s and 1980s under some of the harshest conditions anyone has attempted commercially. Also sold as ATF or Matanuska Tundra. Extraordinarily resinous — the trichome coverage is the first thing anyone notices — with a pungent aroma of citrus peel, pine, and cold menthol. The effect leans sativa and arrives with real force. Cold-hardy, hard to find true, and one of the few American cultivars with a genuine regional identity.

The Matanuska Valley presented conditions no one would choose: a short, cold season at high latitude, with growers working largely in isolation. What came out of it was a cultivar of exceptional resin density and unmistakable character, developed through the late 1970s and 80s by people solving a hard problem locally. This cultivar finishes quickly, so it is valued for being Alaska’s contribution to American cannabis rests almost entirely on this line.
