The backbone of modern indica breeding and hybrid development

Northern Lights (NL-1, NL-2, NL-5) is one of the most important modern cannabis cultivars. Selected in the Pacific Northwest around the turn of the 1980s and refined in the Netherlands soon after, Northern Lights became the parent stock behind an enormous share of what followed, Super Silver Haze and Shiva Skunk among them. It has been years since we grew NL at the farm, so we were thrilled to acquire seeds from a preservationist who work with some old stock that had been stored since 1983.

"NL-1" is the original variety of the Northern Lights line. It was first acquired in 1979 by Seattle Greg through the author Murphy Stevens as "Purest Indica," eventually becoming the backbone of all of the Northern Lights hybrids. Over 40 years ago, Murphy Stevens worked with these genetics and developed the Northern Lights line of #1 through #11, with the #1 being closest to this original "Purest Indica" and the #11 being the most tropical and furthest from it. NL-5 is one of the most revered Northern Lights, with a classic experience of true Afghan Landrace genetics that will provide a very chill experience with some sativa Thai in the mix.

Heritage Notes

Developed in the Pacific Northwest around the turn of the 1980s and refined soon after in the Netherlands, Northern Lights marks the point where cannabis breeding became a deliberate discipline rather than a matter of saved seed. Its influence is nearly impossible to overstate — it sits somewhere in the background of a very large share of the modern catalog. Growing it today is a way of keeping the foundation visible.
